Your Coaches!

RiderCoach™ Instructors are the backbone of the MSF RiderCourse™ training system. All RiderCoach™ (instructors) must complete an intensive Instructor Preparation Course prior to becoming an MSF Basic RiderCourse™ Certified Instructor. Only nationally certified MSF RiderCoach™ Instructors teach courses at Motorcycle Training of Florida, Inc., providing training in Jacksonville, Green Cove Springs, and Lake City, Florida. We ask you to take a moment and meet our instructors through their biographies.

Larry Smith

Larry was in Law Enforcement for more than 32 years and was assigned to the Florida Highway Patrol MotorSquad in Jacksonville. He joined the MotorSquad in 1987 and retired in November 2012. Larry started in Miami and then moved to Jacksonville in 1989. He was also a Police Motorcycle Instructor for the State of Florida, being certified through IPTM in 1990. He is the former owner/operator of Florida Motorcycle Training Inc., starting the company in 1995 and successfully operated it until 2003. Missing his enjoyment for teaching and motorcycles he established Motorcycle Training of Florida, Inc. in 2006. Larry has also been a Nationally Certified RiderCoach™ (Instructor) with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) since 1995.

Jerod Wilcox

Jerod served in the U.S. Navy and retired with more than 20 years of service. Originally from Wyoming, he started his naval career in Virginia Beach, VA. and then transferred to Camp Pendelton, CA. After 3 years in California, the Navy moved him and his family to Naval Station Mayport in 1999 and then transferred again to NAS (Naval Air Station) Jacksonville. He is currently stationed at HS-7 (Dusty Dogs). He has been riding for more than 12 years. His love for riding led him to become Nationally Certified as a RiderCoach™ (Instructor) with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF). Jerod is looking forward to training you for a safe and enjoyable motorcycle experience.

Roger Huggins

Roger served over 31 years with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office in various positions including 12 years with S.W.A.T., A Supervisor in the Traffic Division over the Drug Interdiction Unit and the DUI Unit. Roger has taught for the Institute of Police Technology & Management at UNF for over 12 years. In 1998 he started with the MSF curriculum. Roger currently holds certification including: MSF, Harley-Davidson Riders Edge, Police Motor Officer Instructor, GWRRA Trike School, Lee Park's Total Control and the Florida Rider Training Program. On a personal note he has been riding for 40+ years, enjoys riding the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Smokey mountains, out West, & Canada. He currently rides a Harley-Davidson Road Glide for pleasure & a Suzuki TL1000 on the track.

Darren Harris

Darren serves his community as a Jacksonville Sheriffs Office Motorcycle Squad instructor and rides with the JSO Motor Detail. In his participation in Motor Rodeo events he has won many awards nationwide! He is certified as a Police Motor Officer Skills Instructor and a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) RiderCoach™. He has been with Motorcycle Training of Florida, Inc. as one of our premier instructors, teaching and coaching students to be safe and skilled motorcycle riders. His dedication and riding experience is truly an asset to the program and we are fortunate to count Darren among our elite ridercoaches.

Ron Hodges

Ron currently serves the citizens our great State of Florida as a Lieutenant of the Clay County Sheriff's Office Special Operations Traffic Section/Motor Unit, riding and supervising motor details. He was instrumental in development and outfitting the deapartment with its Motor Unit. Ron's experience includes Patrol Operations as a Watch Commander and Investigations Lieutenant, Financial Crimes Section. Ron is our most recent member to join the team of Motorcycle Training of Florida, Inc. Ron rides for pleasure and frequently travels to North Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee to ride. Ron takes motorcycle safety seriously and wishes every rider to enjoy the ride safely for many years to come.

Jim McGinnis

Jim McGinnis provides a well-rounded addition to our coaching staff. He has many years experience riding a variety of motorcycles, the most recent is his GL1800 Gold Wing. He has also been involved with the Gold Wing Road Riders Association in the creation of safety and training videos to help further the educational opportunities of GWRRA members and other motorcycle riders across the country. Jim is a RiderCoach™ certified by MSF and GWRRA and is currently training both MSF courses and GWRRA Rider Education courses for beginner and experiences riders. You are in excellent and well-trained hands with Jim coaching your class.

Woody Woodford

Woody began his career in the United States Marine Corps and finished twenty years later at the Naval Computer and Telecommunications Command in Washington, DC. Being on the LAM (life after military) he started his Information Technology career, culminating as the CTO for Enterprise Consulting & Integration (ECI, Jacksonville). He currently teaches Computer and Technology courses for a local University, but his real love is riding motorcycles. With more than 40 years of safe riding experience, Woody is a genuine asset to the training cadre of RiderCoaches™ here at MTOFI.
